Introduction

In the West people have searched for many decades to discover the best model to explain creativity, but this lecture examines why this might be a limited and limiting approach to understanding the creative process and why it is better to think of many ‘creativities’ than one unitary approach to creativity.

The lecture looks at alternatives to the classic Western model of the creativity such as Indian ‘Jugaard Innovation’ and East African ‘Jua Kali’ and asks how China’s indigenous approaches to innovation and creativity might evolve.

Biography

Stephen Cummings is Professor of Management at Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand. He completed his PhD in organization theory at Warwick Business School in the UK. His most recent publications include a book titled A New History of Management, Cambridge University Press (2017); “The Limits and Possibilities of History” in The Academy of Management Learning & Education (2016); “Unfreezing change as three steps: Rethinking Kurt Lewin’s legacy for change management” in Human Relations (2016); and Strategy Builder: How to Create and Communicate More Effective Strategies, Wiley (2015). His book Creative Strategy: Reconnecting Business and Innovation, written with Chris Bilton, has recently been translated into Chinese and published by Gold Wall Press.
